Dr Swati MukherjeeInterventional Cardiologist | Advocate for Healthcare EquityDr. Swati Mukherjee is a leading Interventional Cardiologist with a focus on the prevention and management of heart disease and a special interest in healthcare equity. She is one of fewer than 20 female interventional cardiologists in ANZ and the first woman of color in this specialty. She was also the first female Australian cardiologist awarded the prestigious SCAI USA Fellowship for clinical excellence and ethical practice. Dr. Mukherjee practices at Alfred and Cabrini Health and leads translational research on heart disease in women. She has received postgraduate research scholarships from the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand (CSANZ) and the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for her PhD at Monash University. Her fellowship in Interventional Cardiology was completed at Hull and East Yorkshire NHS Trust, UK. As the founding director of a multisite cardiology practice serving underserved communities, particularly in Gippsland, Dr. Mukherjee is committed to providing ethical, quality care. Balancing motherhood and a career, she has shaped her private practice into a "profit for purpose" model, with a strong emphasis on equity. Dr. Mukherjee is a prominent advocate for gender equity in medicine, holding leadership roles in global medical bodies, including the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP), CSANZ, and Women as One USA. She has spearheaded research on gender differences in coronary artery disease and successfully advocated for policy changes promoting flexible cardiology training. An international expert, she has presented on disparities in cardiovascular care at major conferences, including Cardiology Research Technologies (CRT) in Washington, DC, where her Melbourne-based data revealed longer treatment times and lower rates of evidence-based care for women with heart attacks compared to men. Internationally recognized, Dr. Mukherjee is one of two recipients of the prestigious Women as One 2023 International Escalator Mentorship Award. She continues to collaborate on global research, with a recent study on women’s heart disease conducted with her Canadian mentee. Born to first-generation refugees, Dr. Mukherjee embodies the transformative power of education. She plans to collaborate with the Mihir Foundation, supporting education for disadvantaged children in India, to honor her father’s vision of using health and education to build a more equitable world.
